Studio Squared is a series of informal art-making workshops aimed at making a wide range of studio practices accessible to adult audiences. Each workshop focuses on a particular theme and creative process inspired by our exhibitions, and explores methods of creative production through an experiential approach. Following a brief walkthrough of Charles Gaines: Gridwork 1974–1989 and group discussion in the galleries, participants will migrate to Marcus Garvey Park for a hands-on, art-making experience led by a Museum teaching artist. Working from Gaines’s personal interest in trees as subjects and color as a code to articulate meaning, this workshop will focus on drawing living trees from observation and layering the drawings to create new compositions, and invites participants to explore their own process and corresponding color palette.
